People make three key mistakes when they communicate.

Aside from signing books to benefit The Children's Miracle Network, my book launch party featured a ten-minute talk: Are You Making the Three Top Communication Mistakes?

Inquiring minds wanted to know!

To the relief of those in attendance, I shared not just the problems, but also the solutions.

For those of you who couldn't be at the party, here's a recap with the solutions I call the "Three L's."

PROBLEM #1: We talk too much. And write too much.

THE "L" SOLUTION: Less is more.

Getting to less means planning in advance. Be clear about what you want to say and when you've said it, stop talking. The more you say or write, the less people hear.

PROBLEM #2: We think communication is just about words.

THE "L" SOLUTION: Look before you leap!

Read the room and sense if the timing is good. Did they just get in an argument with someone? Have they missed a meal (or two)? A simple "Is this a good time?" can help avoid bad timing. Only 7% of communication is about the words you speak. Along with timing, your tone of voice and body language convey your unspoken message. These non-verbal factors also benefit from preparation, because the more prepared you are the less scared you are.  Which leads to problem #3...

PROBLEM #3: We vote with fear over love.

THE "L" SOLUTION: Love more than you fear.

Oh, fear will always be a factor. But when you love your audience (even if it is just one person), they will FEEL it. You can say hard things with love, and they will be received. My speaking improved tenfold when I stopped worrying about what people thought of me and focused more on loving them through my words and actions.

And don't forget yourself in this equation! Be patient, kind, non-judgmental, and full of hope toward yourself so you can give it to others.

Every person can improve their ability to communicate!  Apply the three "L's" and observe how they level up your ability to be heard.
